Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Su Ruan (Soo-Hwa Yuan) moved to the San Francisco Bay Area at the age of 14. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Architecture, and subsequently studied under Michael McKinnell, Imre Halasz, and Maurice K. Smith at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Master of Architecture.

Interested in how we respond to different spaces on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels, Ruan began to “sculpt” space with fabric and light in 2002. His explorations range from small sculptures to large installations, and he has exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Marin Designers Showcase, ArtSpan, Sculpturesite Gallery, Velvet da Vinci Gallery, Limn Gallery, 111 Minna Gallery, American Institute of Architects Gallery, The Lab, South By Southwest, and others. In addition, he has executed numerous commissioned works for architectural and interior projects.
